Physician Handbook

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provides Phase I post anesthesia care to surgical patients of all ages.  The ten-bed uint is located on the second floor connected to the OR and adjacent to the ACU.  This unit is also the location of choice for the delivery of non-surgical procedures requiring the services of the Department of Anesthesiology, such as scheduled cardioversions, complex dressing changes, and regional blocks.  It is also available to support special procedures which involve the use of conscious sedation.

The direct care providers are all registered nurses with specific education, experience and knowledge for the critical care of patients emerging from anesthesia in the immediate post-operative period.  They work collaboratively with all other Mercy staff members to provide the best standard of care to our patients.  Patients admitted to the PACU are under the direct care of the anesthesiologist.
