The Clinical Nurse Educators (CNE) at Mercy Hospital have a very diverse job description. The job entails meeting the educational needs of the staff nurses at the unit level as well as during the orientation phase. At the unit level, clinical educators are involved in ensuring that nurses complete the unit-based competencies on a yearly basis. Mercy's clinical educators also provide one-on-one education to the nurses at the bedside. They work with new nursing staff during the orientation process, so that the needs of the new employees are met. The clinical educator is also responsible for discovering if the experienced nurse, who is precepting the new employees, has any education needs.
While the CNE role is primarily centered on the activities on the inpatient areas (2B, 3B, 4B, 5B and CCU), they also serve as consultants to all the areas within Mercy Hospital where nurses are employed. They work in conjunction with the Staff Development department to present hospital wide educational programs and also are heavily involved in teaching at each month's general nursing orientation. They are involved in multidisciplinary initiatives to standardize nursing care for designated patient populations and to provide education to the staff regarding these initiatives.
