Also offers drug information, medical encyclopedia and dictionaries and other useful resources.

    This is a free guide to reliable consumer health services information, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Healthfinder can lead you to selected on-line publications, clearinghouses, databases, web sites and support groups, as well as government and non-profit organizations that provide reliable information for the public.

    This site requires a paid subscription (a few free articles are available) but does provide access to reliable health information for those over 50. Helps separate fad from fact. Edited by Johns Hopkins experts from a variety of fields.

While a paid subscription is required, this Letter is an excellent source of information about nutrition, longevity, fitness, preventive medicine and dietary supplements.     Site for the association of women's health and ob-gyn nurses. Women's health advocacy, and political/legislative action information for women health professionals are offered. Their "Healthlinks" to other sites on the Web is convenient.

    A nonprofit women's health advocacy organization, this site has no advertising and accepts no funds from tobacco, pharmaceutical, or medical device manufacturers. Their information packets are inexpensive and comprehensive.
  • www.healthywomen.org
    The site for national women's health research center provides information for laypeople and professionals. Pharmaceutical support, but you can hardly tell.
  • www.ourbodiesourselves.org
    This is the site of the original Women's Boston Health Collective, perhaps the first women's health advocacy organization in the United States. Currently working on international health issues for women, they still publish that classic self care book "Our Bodies Ourselves" in several languages.

    The Melpomene Institute is a nonprofit organization whose activities focus on supporting women's issues around physical activity. They sponsor research about women and exercise and offer resources for things like healthy playgrounds and support cultivation of physical culture for women of all ages.

    Jacob's Institute for Women's Health is a nonprofit which publishes an excellent women's health journal and sponsors interesting research projects around women's health issues. Publishes especially valuable state by state data books on women's health indicators, and a statistical review summary on women's health issues overall.

    This is the site for healthy world online; check out the "healthy woman center." Tends to have lots of advertisements but the article content is pretty reliable and entertaining reading. A good place to start to research something your friend told you. You can link to Medline from this site.
